In short: VivaDecor and Aquadecor are two brands of the same company: Aquadecor is our brand for aquarium backgrounds and decorations, VivaDecor our brand for terrarium backgrounds and decorations. The craft behind both is the same – handmade structures, hand-painted rock and roots, and protective coatings tough enough for permanent contact with water. That aquarium know-how is a big part of why our terrarium backgrounds look so real – and why they handle humid rainforest builds and paludariums so well.
Every workshop has a story, and in ours water plays a big part. The same craft that shapes and paints rock walls for aquariums also builds landscapes for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. This post explains how aquarium decor and terrarium decor come together in one company – and what building landscapes for water has taught us about building them for land.
Where does the VivaDecor story begin?
It begins with Aquadecor, our company's aquarium brand for 3D aquarium backgrounds and decorations. Aquarium keepers want the same thing as terrarium keepers: a tank that looks like a piece of real nature instead of a glass box with a printed poster behind it. Answering that wish means recreating rock, roots and driftwood so convincingly that the eye stops searching for the trick.
The same realism belongs in terrariums. Many aquarists also keep reptiles or amphibians, and the two hobbies have always overlapped – paludariums literally sit on the border between them. That is why our company has two brands: Aquadecor for aquariums and VivaDecor for terrariums, vivaria and paludariums. One company, one craft, one passion for realistic landscapes. VivaDecor is based in Serbia, and our terrarium artists have been at work since 2004 – more than 20 years of recreating nature by hand.

Why do aquarium and terrarium backgrounds have so much in common?
At first glance an aquarium and a terrarium seem like opposites: one is full of water, the other often dry and hot. But the craft behind a convincing background is remarkably similar.
- Shaping: rock faces, roots and soil layers are modelled on real nature, so every crack and grain looks as if it had a natural origin.
- Hand-painting: colour makes or breaks realism. Real rock is never one colour; it has layers, stains, dust and shadows. Our colours and textures are applied by hand, not by machine, which is why no two pieces are identical.
- Protective coatings: underwater, a coating has to survive permanent immersion. That discipline is the foundation for the coatings we use in terrariums, where surfaces face heat, humidity, water and climbing claws.
- Precise fit: an aquarium background has to sit perfectly in the tank. The same thinking applies to terrarium backgrounds made to your inner dimensions.
What did aquarium craft teach us?
Here are the most important lessons we carried over from water to land – and what they mean for you.
| Lesson from aquarium decor | Why it mattered underwater | What it means in your terrarium |
|---|---|---|
| Realism is in the details | Clear water and bright light reveal every flaw | Hand-painted colour shifts and textures that still look real up close and on camera |
| Coatings must be truly waterproof | Surfaces stay submerged permanently | Backgrounds that cope with misting, high humidity and water sections |
| Materials must be safe for animals | Fish live in constant contact with every surface | Non-toxic, odour-free, non-recycled premium materials |
| Weight matters | Heavy decor stresses the glass and is hard to handle | Lightweight backgrounds and decor, much lighter than real rock |
| Technology must disappear | Filters, heaters and tubes ruin the view | Optional service chambers to hide tubing, cables and misting systems |
| Every tank is different | Tank sizes and bracing vary widely | Custom sizes and modular multi-part models for tanks with top bracing |
How did aquarium know-how shape our paludarium backgrounds?
This is where the aquarium roots pay off most. A paludarium combines a land section with a water section, and its background often sits partly in water, partly in splash zones and partly in humid air. Not every background is made for this mix. For us, water is familiar territory.
That is why humid setups – rainforest terrariums and paludariums – receive a different protective coating, sometimes with a glossy finish. It is also why we always ask you to tell us the intended use when you order: a desert background and a paludarium background may look similar in a photo, but they are finished differently. Some models, such as our Grotto Cave background, even come with an integrated water basin, or the same space can be used as a hide or basking platform instead.

What is different between building for water and building for land?
Of course, a terrarium is not simply a dry aquarium. Building for land brings its own challenges, and they shape how VivaDecor works.
| Challenge | Aquarium | Terrarium | How we solve it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animals on the surface | Fish swim past | Reptiles climb, dig and bask on it | Climbing models are siliconed to the glass; terraces and basking shelves built in |
| Heat | Stable water temperature | Basking lamps and hot spots | Heat-resistant material and coatings |
| Claws and teeth | Rarely an issue | Sharp claws and teeth in some species | Tell us the species, and we plan the surface accordingly |
| Climate range | Always wet | From bone-dry desert to dripping rainforest | Coating chosen for desert, rainforest or paludarium use |
| Use of space | Mostly a backdrop | Part of the living area | Side panels, overhanging rock and cave formations, hides |
Which aquascaping ideas work in a terrarium too?
Aquarium keepers who move into terraristics often bring a sharp eye for layout with them – and rightly so. Many principles of aquascaping translate directly to land:
- Hardscape first: in an aquascape, rock and wood are placed before a single plant goes in. In a terrarium, the background, rocks and roots define the structure; plants and leaf litter come last.
- One clear focal point: a cave, a cliff or a massive root should catch the eye first. Place it off-centre, roughly at a third of the width, rather than in the exact middle.
- Foreground, midground, background: low elements at the front, medium decor in the middle and the tallest structures at the back create depth even in a shallow enclosure.
- Consistent material: aquascapers rarely mix five types of stone. A terrarium looks calmer and more natural when rock colours and textures match the background.
- Negative space: open areas let the eye rest – and in a terrarium they also give animals room to move and bask.
The big difference: in a terrarium, the hardscape is not only for looks. Animals climb, rest and hide on it, so every ledge and gap has to be usable and safe.
From the workshop: how a VivaDecor piece is made
Every background goes through the same hands-on steps as our aquarium work. We build the structure from our own in-house material – the formulation is a trade secret – and then paint it by hand, layer by layer, until the rock or root looks weathered and alive. Then come the protective coatings, chosen for your climate. Before anything is packed, we send you photos of your finished piece so you can see exactly what you will receive. Only then does it leave the workshop.
The same care goes into our decor. Our artificial roots, spider roots, driftwood and rocks need no preparation – no boiling, no baking – and they never rot or mould. For anyone who has fought mould on natural wood in a humid tank, that alone is a reason to switch. Have a look at our wood and root decorations to see what aquarium-grade realism looks like on land.

What stays the same after all these years?
Tools improve and designs evolve, but the core idea is the same for both brands: nature is the benchmark. Our tagline – "Nature Has Never Had Such Competition" – is a promise we take seriously. It means we do not stop at "good enough for a pet shop shelf". It means a piece is finished only when it would look at home in the habitat it imitates.
- Handmade, every piece unique: colours and textures are never automated.
- Made to measure: custom sizes, structures and colour tones on request.
- Built to last: resistant to heat, humidity, water and impact, and easy to clean with a soft brush.
- Personal: photo approval before shipping, free shipping with tracking.

FAQ
How are VivaDecor and Aquadecor connected?
They are two brands of the same company. Aquadecor is our brand for 3D aquarium backgrounds and decorations; VivaDecor is our brand for terrarium, vivarium and paludarium backgrounds and decorations. One company, one craft, the same standards.
Can a VivaDecor background be used in a paludarium with water?
Yes. Tell us that you are building a paludarium when you order, and we apply the protective coating designed for humid and wet use. Some models also offer an integrated water basin.
Where are VivaDecor backgrounds made?
In our workshop in Serbia, by hand. Standard sizes take 10–12 business days to produce, and shipping takes about 10 business days, free of charge and with a tracking number.
Do I need aquarium experience to install a VivaDecor background?
No. Models that animals climb on are siliconed to the glass; decorative-only models in established terrariums can be mounted with magnets or suction cups.
