In short: A gargoyle gecko (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) is a robust, nocturnal climber from New Caledonia that grows to about 18–23 cm and lives 15 years or more. The ideal gargoyle gecko enclosure is taller than it is wide (60 × 45 × 90 cm is a comfortable adult size), runs at room-like temperatures of 22–26 °C, swings between drier days and humid nights, and offers a dense climbing structure from floor to ceiling. This guide walks through size, climate, layout and the details that make gargoyles different from their famous cousin, the crested gecko.
What is a gargoyle gecko and how big does it get?
Gargoyle geckos come from the southern part of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Their name comes from the small bony bumps on the back of the head that give them a slightly stony, "gargoyle" look. In the wild they move between shrubs, tree trunks and the forest floor, hunting insects and licking fruit, nectar and sap after dark.
Compared with many other pet lizards they stay manageable in size, but they are noticeably stockier than crested geckos. Their tail is semi-prehensile and can be dropped in an emergency; unlike in the crested gecko, it regrows – usually shorter and with a different pattern.
| Trait | Typical range | What it means for the setup |
|---|---|---|
| Total length (adult) | approx. 18–23 cm | Needs real climbing height, not just floor space |
| Weight (adult) | approx. 50–70 g | Branches and ledges must be solid and fixed |
| Activity | Nocturnal / crepuscular | Daytime hides high up; night-time viewing |
| Life expectancy | 15–20 years with good care | Plan an enclosure that lasts, not a starter box |
| Temperament | Calm but can bite firmly; males territorial | Usually kept singly or one male with females |
How big should a gargoyle gecko enclosure be?
Because gargoyles are climbers, height matters more than width. Hatchlings feel safer in a smaller box where they find food easily; adults use every centimetre of vertical space. The sizes below are practical recommendations from keeping experience – bigger is always fine as long as cover is dense enough.
| Life stage | Recommended inner size (W × D × H) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hatchling (up to approx. 10 g) | 30 × 30 × 45 cm | Lots of fine plant cover, food bowl high up |
| Juvenile (10–30 g) | 45 × 45 × 60 cm | Start adding thicker branches and ledges |
| Adult, single animal | 60 × 45 × 90 cm | Comfortable long-term size |
| Adult pair or trio | 90 × 45 × 90 cm or larger | Multiple feeding and hiding spots, watch for stress |
In Germany, the BMEL expert report on minimum requirements for keeping reptiles calculates enclosure sizes from the animal's head-body length. Treat any legal minimum as the floor, not the goal: a gargoyle in a tall, structured enclosure shows far more natural behaviour. Our crested gecko terrarium guide covers the general logic of vertical habitats if you want to compare.

Gargoyle gecko temperature, humidity and lighting
New Caledonia has a mild, subtropical climate. Gargoyles cope well with ordinary indoor temperatures, but they suffer quickly in heat. Temperatures permanently above about 28 °C are a common cause of stress and refusal to eat, so in summer an overheating enclosure is a bigger risk than a cool one.
| Parameter | Day | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Air temperature | 22–26 °C | 18–22 °C |
| Warmest spot (top) | up to approx. 28 °C | no extra heat needed |
| Humidity | 50–60 % (allowed to dry) | 70–80 % after misting |
| Lighting | 10–12 h, low-level UVB optional but beneficial | dark |
The rhythm matters more than an exact number: mist in the evening, let the enclosure dry down during the day. Permanently wet air combined with poor ventilation leads to mould, skin problems and bacterial issues. Good airflow – usually a ventilation strip at the front plus a mesh top – keeps the climate healthy.
How do you set up a gargoyle gecko terrarium step by step?
- Background first. A structured 3D background turns the flat rear glass into climbing terrain. It gives grip, ledges and visual barriers, and it hides the silicone lines and any tubing.
- Diagonal and horizontal branches. Gargoyles rest on horizontal perches and travel along diagonals. Place thick branches from front corners to the background so there are routes across the whole volume.
- Dense cover in the upper third. This is where the gecko sleeps during the day. Leafy plants, a root cluster or a shaded ledge work well.
- A feeding ledge. A fixed shelf or magnetic ledge for the fruit-mix bowl, high enough that the gecko feels safe while eating.
- Substrate and floor. A humus-rich mix or a simple paper-towel setup for quarantine. Add a hide at ground level – gargoyles also forage on the floor.
- Climate check. Run the enclosure empty for a few days with thermometer and hygrometer before the animal moves in.
For the climbing structure we recommend roots and wood that cannot rot in a humid enclosure. Our crested gecko enclosure decor fits gargoyles just as well, because both species share the same New Caledonian climate and climbing style.

Gargoyle gecko vs crested gecko: what changes in the setup?
Many keepers come to gargoyles after keeping a crested gecko. The care is similar, but a few differences affect how you build the enclosure.
| Aspect | Gargoyle gecko | Crested gecko |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Stockier, heavier head | Slimmer, crests above the eyes |
| Tail | Regrows after loss | Does not regrow |
| Insect share in diet | Higher – enjoys regular insects | Lower, often fruit mix only |
| Behaviour towards conspecifics | More prone to tail-nipping and biting | Generally more tolerant |
| Floor use | Regularly forages low | Mostly stays higher |
The practical consequence: a gargoyle enclosure needs solid ground-level cover and sturdy perches, and if you keep more than one animal you need plenty of visual barriers. A background with ledges and recesses breaks lines of sight better than a smooth wall.
What do gargoyle geckos eat?
A complete powdered fruit diet for New Caledonian geckos forms the base, offered fresh every two to three days. In addition, gargoyles readily take appropriately sized insects such as crickets, locusts or roaches, dusted with calcium and vitamins. Insects can be offered roughly once or twice a week for adults and more often for growing animals. A shallow water bowl is useful, although most geckos drink droplets after misting.
Can gargoyle geckos live together?
Two males must never be housed together – fights cause bite wounds and lost tails. Females can sometimes share with one male, but gargoyles are known for nipping tails, especially during feeding. Many keepers keep them singly, which is completely fine for this species. If you try a group, provide a larger enclosure, several feeding spots and a plan B (a second enclosure) ready.
Buying a gargoyle gecko: what about legal aspects?
Buy only captive-bred animals from a reputable breeder and keep the paperwork that documents the origin. International protection of New Caledonian geckos has been under discussion for some time, and documentation or registration requirements can change. Check the current status for your species with the responsible authority before you buy; our post on reptile keeping rules in Germany gives a general overview.
From the workshop: building backgrounds for gargoyles
When a customer tells us the background is for a gargoyle or crested gecko, we pay attention to three things. First, horizontal ledges at different heights, because these geckos love to rest on flat surfaces. Second, the protective coating: humid enclosures get a different, moisture-proof coating – sometimes slightly glossy – so please always tell us the intended use. Third, depth for plants and roots, so the gecko can disappear completely during the day. On request we extend the background to one or both side walls, which considerably increases the climbing area in a tall enclosure.
All our backgrounds are handmade, so no two are identical, and you receive photos of the finished piece before it ships. Because gargoyles climb on the background, it should be siliconed to the glass. The material is non-toxic, odour-free and resistant to humidity, and a soft brush is all you need for cleaning. Measure the inner dimensions of your tank with our size guide before ordering.

Which mistakes do new gargoyle keepers make most often?
- Too warm: a heat lamp sized for a desert lizard quickly pushes the top of a small enclosure above 30 °C.
- Too wet, too long: constant misting without drying phases instead of a clear day–night rhythm.
- Too little cover: an open enclosure with a few thin twigs makes a nocturnal gecko permanently stressed.
- Loose decor: unfixed branches or ledges that fall when a 60 g gecko jumps on them.
- Housing animals together too early: animals are put together before it is clear whether they are males or females.
FAQ
Do gargoyle geckos need UVB?
They can be kept successfully without UVB if the diet is well supplemented, but many keepers now provide low-level UVB with plenty of shaded areas. It supports natural rhythms and vitamin D3 synthesis. Make sure the gecko can always retreat out of the light.
How often should I mist a gargoyle gecko enclosure?
Usually once in the evening, in warm or dry rooms also lightly in the morning. The enclosure should dry down to around 50–60 % humidity during the day. If the glass stays fogged all day, ventilation is too weak.
Is a gargoyle gecko good for beginners?
Yes, for beginners who accept that it is a nocturnal display animal rather than a cuddly pet. Care is uncomplicated, but the bite of an adult is noticeable and handling should be calm and short.
Which background suits a gargoyle gecko best?
A vertical background with roots or rock ledges, deep enough for plants and with many resting surfaces. Root and soil designs create a forest-floor look; rock designs with terraces give more flat perches.
