Leopard Gecko vs Bearded Dragon: Which Pet Suits You?

Bearded dragon, compared with the leopard gecko as a pet

In short: A leopard gecko suits you if you want a calm, small, low-cost pet that fits a 90–100 cm terrarium and is most active in the evening. A bearded dragon suits you if you want a bold, daytime companion and can offer a 120–150 cm enclosure, strong UVB lighting and a daily salad routine. Both are hardy, captive-bred and widely available, so the right choice depends on your space, budget and daily rhythm.

Leopard gecko or bearded dragon: what is the main difference?

The two species come from similar dry landscapes but live very different lives. The leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is a small, ground-dwelling gecko from rocky scrubland in Pakistan, Afghanistan and north-west India. It hides during the day and comes out at dusk.

The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is a sun-loving agamid from the Australian interior. It basks for hours, climbs onto rocks and branches and is easy to watch all day. That single difference, night versus day, shapes almost everything else: enclosure size, lighting, power bill and how much interaction you get.

How do they compare on size, lifespan and climate?

The table below gathers the key husbandry values. They are conservative ranges that most experienced keepers and reptile vets agree on.

Factor Leopard gecko Bearded dragon
Adult length 20–25 cm 40–55 cm
Adult weight 45–80 g 300–600 g
Lifespan in captivity 15–20 years 10–15 years

Recommended enclosure (one adult) 90 × 45 × 45 cm, better 100 × 50 × 50 cm 120 × 60 × 60 cm minimum, better 150 × 80 × 80 cm
Warm spot 32–35 °C 40–45 °C (surface under the lamp)
Cool side 24–26 °C 25–30 °C
Night temperature 18–22 °C 18–22 °C

Diet Live insects only Insects when young, mainly greens and weeds as adults
Typical price in 2026 (normal colour, captive-bred) 50–150 € 60–150 €

Prices are approximate 2026 prices in EUR from breeders and specialist shops. Rare colour morphs of both species can cost several hundred euros.

Which one is easier? Our scored comparison

We scored both species from 1 to 5 on six practical criteria. A 5 always means "easier or better for a typical first-time keeper".

Criterion Leopard gecko Bearded dragon Why
Space needed 5 2 A gecko fits on a sideboard; a dragon needs a large piece of furniture.
Setup cost 4 2 Bigger glass, stronger lamps and a thermostat for each heat source add up.
Running cost 5 2 A dragon's lighting draws three to four times more power.
Handling 3 5 Dragons usually sit calmly on a hand; geckos tolerate short sessions.
Daytime visibility 2 5 You will see a dragon all day; a gecko mostly after 7 pm.
Daily effort 4 2 Adult dragons need fresh greens every day; geckos eat every two to three days.
Total (max. 30) 23 18 The gecko wins on practicality, the dragon on interaction.

The totals do not make the bearded dragon a "harder" pet in a negative sense. It simply asks for more room, more electricity and more routine, and gives back a far more visible animal.

Why do so many people choose a leopard gecko?

In Germany, "Leopardgecko" is searched around 12,100 times a month, more than any other single reptile. The reasons are easy to see.

  • Size: a small terrarium works in a flat, a student room or a child's bedroom (with an adult in charge).
  • Temperament: leopard geckos rarely bite and move slowly, which makes them forgiving for beginners.
  • Cost: modest lamps and low power use keep the yearly budget small.
  • Captive breeding: they have been bred for decades, so healthy animals and many colour morphs are easy to find.
  • Evening activity: they wake up just as working people come home.

Why do so many people choose a bearded dragon?

Worldwide, the bearded dragon is the most searched pet reptile on Google. Its appeal is personality: it looks at you, reacts to movement, bobs its head and often climbs onto a hand without fuss.

  • Interaction: few reptiles accept regular handling as calmly.
  • Visibility: it is awake when the family is, which makes it a living centrepiece in the room.
  • Robustness: with correct heat and UVB it is a tough, long-lived animal.
  • Social media: dragons are photogenic, expressive and hugely popular in videos, which keeps demand high.

What does each terrarium look like?

Leopard gecko layout

Place a heat lamp or heat mat with a thermostat at one end, so a flat stone there reaches 32–35 °C. Put three hides along the gradient: a warm hide, a humid hide with damp moss for shedding and a cool hide at the other end.

A rock background with ledges gives the gecko extra floor-like surfaces to explore at night. Low branches and a few artificial plants break up sight lines, which helps a shy animal feel safe.

Bearded dragon layout

The heart of a dragon enclosure is the basking zone: a stable rock platform 25–35 cm below a metal halide lamp or a heat spot plus T5 HO UVB tube. The other end stays cooler and holds a large hide.

Dragons love height, so a structured background with ledges and a sturdy branch let it climb towards the light and choose its own temperature. Our bearded dragon terrarium setup guide walks through the full layout.

Which background size fits each terrarium?

A 3D background is silicone-glued to the back glass and should cover it almost completely. These standard sizes leave a small margin for the frame.

Terrarium (L × W × H) Typical for Background size (W × H)
90 × 45 × 45 cm Leopard gecko 87.5 × 42.5 cm
100 × 50 × 50 cm Leopard gecko (generous) 97.5 × 47.5 cm
120 × 60 × 60 cm Bearded dragon (minimum) 117.5 × 57.5 cm
150 × 80 × 80 cm Bearded dragon (recommended) 147.5 × 57.5 cm, or a custom height

Measure the inside of your glass before ordering; the background size guide shows exactly how. A design with ledges and caves, such as the Reptile Rock background, works for both species because it adds climbing and hiding space.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Heat without a thermostat: heat mats and lamps can overheat and burn either species.
  • Weak UVB for a dragon: compact coil bulbs and old tubes are a common cause of metabolic bone disease.
  • Too small a dragon terrarium: a juvenile grows to adult size within about a year.
  • Keeping animals together: two male geckos or two dragons will fight; both species are happy alone.
  • Bare glass walls: without a background and cover, many animals pace the glass and stay stressed.

FAQ

Can a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon live together?

No. They need different temperatures, light and activity times, and the dragon would stress or injure the gecko. Each needs its own terrarium.

Which one lives longer?

The leopard gecko usually does, often 15–20 years. Bearded dragons typically reach 10–15 years with good UVB and diet.

Does a leopard gecko need UVB?

It can survive without, but most vets now recommend low-strength UVB on a 12-hour cycle, with shaded areas the gecko can retreat to.

Which is better for children?

A bearded dragon is more interactive, a leopard gecko more affordable. In both cases an adult must take responsibility for heat, light, food and hygiene.
