In short: Live plants are best in humid, well-lit, bioactive terrariums with light animals such as dart frogs or crested geckos. Artificial plants win wherever plants get eaten, trampled, overheated or dried out – bearded dragon, leopard gecko and most snake setups. Many experienced keepers combine both: live plants where they can thrive, artificial plants and moss where they would die.

Live or artificial terrarium plants – what is the real difference?
The question is less about taste than about conditions. A plant needs light, water and a temperature it can tolerate. A reptile enclosure often offers too much of one and too little of another: a 40 °C basking spot, 30 % humidity in a desert tank, or a 2 kg snake that lies on everything.
Live plants bring real benefits where they can grow: they raise humidity, take up nutrients from waste and look alive. Artificial plants give you full control: they stay in shape, never carry pests and survive any climate. The table below scores both on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent).
| Criterion | Live plants | Artificial plants |
|---|---|---|
| Natural look up close | 5 | 4 |
| Survives heat and dry air | 2 | 5 |
| Survives heavy or digging animals | 2 | 5 |
| Effort (watering, pruning, light) | 2 | 5 |
| Helps humidity and waste breakdown | 5 | 1 |
| Risk of pests, pesticides or toxicity | 3 | 5 |
| Cost over five years | 3 | 4 |
| Edible enrichment for herbivores | 5 | 1 |
The result is not a winner but a split: live plants score where biology matters, artificial plants where reliability matters.
Which plants are best for each terrarium animal?
This is the information gain we missed in most guides: one table, real animals, concrete picks for both sides.
| Animal | Climate | Good live plants | Recommended artificial plants | Our advice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bearded dragon | Hot, dry | Spineless opuntia, Haworthia, Gasteria (all out of the basking zone) | Tall forest grass, Chico palm | Mostly artificial, a few edible live plants |
| Leopard gecko | Warm, dry | Haworthia, snake plant | Round leaf plant, cypress plants | Artificial plus one or two succulents |
| Crested gecko | Moderate, humid | Pothos, Dracaena, bromeliads, creeping fig | Tropical green plant, dense terrarium bush | Mixed, live plants low and in the middle |
| Chameleon | Warm, humid, airy | Hibiscus, umbrella plant (Schefflera), pothos | Dense bush for upper cover | Mostly live, artificial for density |
| Ball python, corn snake | Moderate | Snake plant, pothos in heavy pots | Forest bush, forest fern, terrarium moss | Mostly artificial; snakes flatten plants |
| Blue tongue skink | Moderate to dry | Snake plant, hardy grasses | Tall forest grass, forest bush | Mostly artificial; skinks dig |
| Dart frogs | Humid, wet | Bromeliads, Fittonia, Peperomia, mosses, creeping fig | Moss and leaves for spots plants cannot reach | Mostly live, bioactive |
| Land tortoise | Varies by species | Edible weeds: dandelion, plantain, clover | Only out of reach – tortoises bite everything | Live edible plants only |
| Tarantula, hermit crab | Varies | Rarely needed | Moss, small plants for cover | Artificial is easiest |

When do live plants make sense?
Live plants work best when four conditions come together: humidity above 60 %, a plant light in addition to the UVB lamp, a substrate deep enough for roots and an animal light enough not to crush them. That describes dart frog vivariums, crested gecko and chameleon setups and the humid end of a bioactive build.
How to prepare live plants safely
- Buy from a nursery that sells pesticide-free plants for terrariums, or wait several weeks before using a garden-centre plant.
- Remove the nursery soil and rinse the roots. Fertiliser pellets and perlite can be swallowed.
- Check for snails, mites and eggs. A short quarantine in a separate tub is wise.
- Avoid known toxic species such as Dieffenbachia, oleander, croton and spurges (Euphorbia).
In a bioactive terrarium, live plants are essential, because they use the nutrients released by the clean-up crew. Our bioactive terrarium guide explains which plants match tropical and arid builds.
When are artificial plants the better choice?
Artificial plants make sense wherever a living plant would suffer or become a hazard:
- Desert tanks: under a basking lamp with 40 °C and dry air, almost every green plant burns or dries out.
- Heavy animals: adult snakes, skinks and bearded dragons flatten plants in days.
- Diggers: skinks and many geckos uproot everything planted in loose substrate.
- Low light: enclosures without a plant LED cannot keep live plants healthy long-term.
- Quick changes: artificial plants let you rearrange the layout without replanting.
Good artificial plants are made from soft, flexible material with natural colour variation, so animals can push through them without injury. Rinse them under warm water every few weeks, and they look like new for years.

What about moss and a moss terrarium kit?
Moss is one of the most-searched terrarium plant topics, mainly because of closed moss terrarium kits. Those jars work because they are cool, wet and closed – the opposite of most reptile enclosures. Live moss in a heated terrarium turns brown within weeks unless humidity stays high and the moss sits far from the heat source.
In reptile tanks we recommend live sphagnum in a humid hide and on the floor of frog tanks, and artificial moss for visible surfaces such as ledges, hides and the edges of a background. Our Terrarium Moss keeps its colour under a basking lamp and can be glued or simply laid onto rocks and roots.
How do you combine live and artificial plants?
Most of the best-looking terrariums we see use a layered approach. Here is how we would plan a mixed setup in a 120 × 60 × 60 cm enclosure:
- Background: a 3D background with roots or rock ledges as the base structure.
- Back corners: tall artificial plants like grasses or a palm to frame the scene and hide technology.
- Cool, humid zone: live plants in a hidden pot or deep substrate, where light is good and temperatures moderate.
- Warm side and basking zone: only artificial plants and rocks, nothing that can burn.
- Floor: leaf litter and moss to link both worlds visually.
A dense, realistic artificial plant such as our Tropical Green Plant blends easily with live pothos or Dracaena, so visitors will not tell where one ends and the other begins.

What do terrarium plants cost?
| Item | Typical price in 2026 | Lifespan in the terrarium |
|---|---|---|
| Live tropical plant (pothos, bromeliad) | 5–20 € | Months to years, if conditions fit |
| Live succulent (Haworthia, Gasteria) | 4–12 € | Often short under heavy animals |
| Plant LED for a 90–120 cm tank | 40–120 € | Several years |
| High-quality artificial plant | 15–45 € | Many years |
| Artificial moss, per pack | 10–25 € | Many years |
Live plants look cheaper at the till, but replacement plants and the extra plant light add up in desert or snake tanks. In humid, bioactive setups the cost picture reverses.
What are the most common plant mistakes?
- Putting garden-centre plants straight into the terrarium without rinsing off soil and chemicals.
- Expecting live plants to grow under a UVB lamp alone.
- Placing any plant, live or artificial, directly under the basking lamp.
- Using cheap, stiff plastic plants with sharp edges.
- Giving tortoises access to artificial plants they can chew.
FAQ
Are artificial plants safe for reptiles?
Yes, if they are made from soft, non-toxic material without loose parts. Avoid cheap plastic with sharp edges and keep them away from animals that chew decor, such as tortoises.
Do live plants increase humidity?
Yes, especially in closed enclosures with damp substrate. In open, ventilated desert tanks the effect is small.
Can I mix live and artificial plants in a bioactive terrarium?
Yes. The clean-up crew needs living plants and leaf litter, but artificial plants in hot or heavily used areas do no harm and keep the scene full.
